The Religious Reich Rises Again… Unlike Their Pizza

From Mother Jones we have an article entitled “Hail Mary”. Here is another way that the uber-rich Theocracy is attempting to co-op the Progressive culture of our country.

Here’s an example of the town they are building Ave Maria outside of Naples, FL:

“Now only partially built, the future Ave Maria University sits amid a flat, swampy, and desolate expanse of tomato fields and orange groves 30 miles northeast of Naples. A brawny, 100-foot-tall, arching Gothic oratory is already rising, soon to be flanked by the nation’s largest crucifix and encircled by an entire Catholic community, Ave Maria Town, which will welcome 25,000 residents. In keeping with the tenor of Naples, where the average home costs $1.95 million and Republicans outnumber Democrats by nearly 4-to-1, the town will not be a hive of spartan monks’ cells. Rather, it will feature a mix of “affordable” $175,000 town houses, $665,000 condos, and far more palatial Corinthian-columned manses equipped with lavish swimming pools. The golf course will be “championship” caliber, and the retail core will be at once walkable and pious. “Our plan,” Monaghan told a gathering of Catholics last year (sending constitutional lawyers into a kerfuffle), “is that no adult material will appear on the town’s cable system, and the pharmacy will not sell contraceptives.”

Essentially, Monaghan plans to draw a line in the sand against a trend he deems evil. Even as the rapidly growing church lists right worldwide and a few rock-ribbed Catholic orders—most notably Opus Dei—are surging, American Catholics are becoming ever more progressive. Thirty-seven percent favor an easing of the church’s abortion policies, according to a recent cnn/USA Today/Gallup Poll, and fifty-five percent support the ordination of women. Meanwhile, several Catholic universities—among them Holy Cross and St. Scholastica—have gone so far as to play host to the dread Vagina Monologues.”

“To conservatives, Monaghan is a deep-pocketed savior. Florida governor Jeb Bush, a converted Catholic, made Ave Maria Town a special tax district like Disney World, giving the self-appointed Board of Supervisors (run by Monaghan’s development partner) wideonging powers and exempting the town from state and local laws.”

It seems to me that if you are a member of the Theocracy, ya’s don’t gotta pay most taxes and your parents are pretty rich. This kind of enclave is a great place to indoctrinate and program un-discriminating “thought modules”.

BTW_ this is all being financed by the Founder of Dominos Pizza, Tom Monaghan.

For all of you left-leaners and Progressives: Did you ever think that the pizza, pot, and booze confabs we engaged in for decades might just lead to the destruction of our world view?

Now you’ll understand when I proudly state that I have never eaten a Dominos pizza. I warned you all long ago about this.

Yes, I’m a little late for this post. Crucify me…

“Big Box vs. New Orleans” Petition

Thanks to Think New Orleans, I got word about a petition concerning a retail developer that wishes to build a strip mall right in the middle of Mid-City. Please sign it if you care for the way our city gets rebuilt.

Do we really desire to live in a pseudo suburbia? Could we actually want traffic to congest major streets, tying up time and burnt gas, giving us pollution probs? What’s going to happen with the local stores, especially ones that are trying to get reopened? Will the “feel” of NOLA be replaced by the onslaughts of development that ignores the style of living we enjoyed here pre-Flood?

Can you NOT imagine a day when automobile-driven siting will result in deserted strip  malls pocketed in many parts of the city whilst we are using Transit, walking and using bikes shopping in our neighborhoods?
If your answer to any question is no, then please sign this petition.

Now It’s Pipe Poop and Rust…

From “Fix the Pumps” comes the newest information on how well the ACOE is looking after the tax dollars they are using toget NOLA’s protections up again since the failure of the Federal levee system.

A snippet:

“What is obvious, but somehow has escaped everyone’s notice until now, is that the pipes are unpainted, and have been since they were installed almost a year ago. Naturally, they’re rusting.”

We need lots of Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs, a bunch of batteries, and rubber bands. We locals could build a better system for drainage and protection compared to the Corps’ juvenile attempts.

Thank the Goddess! Another state and it’s people show some freakin’ Humanity. LINK

I am one of the Founding Mothers of this movement, and I’m also a recipient of the value and life-saving quality of this little herb. Twice my little weedy friend has pulled my tush away from the abyss we call Death. In day-to-day life my little friend helps with the pain and debilitation caused by the drugs I had to take years ago. (periphrial nerve damage)

To anyone who stands in the way of this new wave: FUCK YOU! And, if you are coming at this because of WWJD, I’ll stick your crucifix in a place you don’t want it to go. Those of us who are hurting, and freakin’ surviving, need a little comfort and peace. We need to be able to eat, to not be tortured by physical, drug-caused anomolies… we need to be able to rest from the war that is day-to-day for our club. (Yes, we might be a little stoned, but you never want to meet me in pain and misery… “She’ll rip your lungs out Jim!”)

From Matt at Fix the Pumps: “Oh. My. God.”

Here are two pieces from Fix the Pumps: Here and here.

In the first piece, you will see some pics that I will tell you absolutely should not be happening. The second piece describes the model to be used for calculating the viability of a hydraulic system. In both scenarios we are screwed if this is what the ACoE intends to use for keeping us dry.

Geek Dinner III

Last night we attended the third Geek Dinner at Dangerblond’s casa. Everything was so just tres kewl: great food, good folks and the Blogger spawn seemed to be entertained.

I sampled different dishes and they were killer. (We do seem to take our food very seriously, don’t we?) The best thing though, is just being around such a wonderful group of dynamic people and groovin’ on it. I really needed the lift from this. I think all of us needed this little evening.
When’s Geek Dinner IV?

Betts and I will host GD V: the “Bastille Project”, at the Treehouse in June (fingers crossed).

Merchant Map for Mid-City

Stay Local is a movement to showcase the businesses here in NOLA. Here is their map for Mid-City, released a few weeks ago.

Please frequent these merchants, and bug your local vendors to register with StayLocal.org for free. We need maps for every neighborhood so that when we spend money, it stays in Orleans Parish.
