The Goal Is Prosperity. (For Whom?)

I picked up this piece from Facing South entitled: Poverty: The Katrina Dialogue That Never Happened

As I have known about poverty most of my life, and sans Betts’ being with me, I’d be in deep poop as far as economic rungs go. The Disabled and the Elderly get shit from the so-called “Social Contract” in this country. I can understand, but not like it: we are not that productive for the economy and we are on our way “out”.

But… when it comes to the topic of the working poor, I cannot understand the Guvmit’s actions at all. Who the Hell is gonna pull your latte, mow your grass, stock the stores in the middle of the night if they are all dead from starvation and disease? Neo-con fucks don’t get it: they need these people in order to have their easy lives.

The Bushite regime discusses the Goal of Prosperity. I ask, “For Whom?”. Many folks like me aren’t into the game of getting rich. The goal of living is a Spiritual thing: people you meet, acts of kindness, the discovery/learning of things… The problem is that all people in this country deserve a living wage, and then let them decide what prosperity means to them.

I’m not going to rant all over the place on this topic, not right now. Please look at the links, read them, then study the map below. Notice that persistant poverty seems to be through many of the Red states? A living wage could conceivably turn those states Blue. Think about it. It could also change New Orleans.

Excerpts from the Washpo:

Poverty forced its way to the top of President Bush’s agenda in the confusing days after Hurricane Katrina battered the Gulf Coast and flooded New Orleans. Confronted with one of the most pressing political crises of his presidency, Bush, who in the past had faced withering criticism for speaking little about the poor, said the nation has a solemn duty to help them.

“All of us saw on television, there’s . . . some deep, persistent poverty in this region,” he said in a prime-time speech from New Orleans’s Jackson Square, 17 days after the Aug. 29 hurricane. “That poverty has roots in a history of racial discrimination, which cut off generations from the opportunity of America. We have a duty to confront this poverty with bold action.”

As it happened, poverty’s turn in the presidential limelight was brief. Bush has talked little about the issue since the immediate crisis passed, while pursuing policies that his liberal critics say will hurt the poor. He has publicly mentioned domestic poverty six times since giving back-to-back speeches on the issue in September. Domestic poverty did not come up in his State of the Union address in January, and his most recent budget included no new initiatives directed at the poor.

Tony Snow, the president’s press secretary, said Bush is unlikely to invoke poverty when he addresses the national convention of the NAACP today, and instead will focus on opportunities available to everyone. “After all, the goal is prosperity,” Snow said.

Administration officials and outside advisers say education accountability and school choice; home ownership; and efforts to encourage marriage and further revamp welfare by requiring more recipients to work — all efforts Bush supports — ultimately help the poor.

“The Bush administration has had a consistent, forward-looking strategy on poverty,” said Robert E. Rector, a senior research fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation. “They have had a consistent effort to raise work levels, reduce out-of-wedlock childbearing and promote marriage.”

Molly Ivins- The Politics of American Greed

I have been reading Molly Ivins for almost twenty years. She is one of my bulwarks and an information source. Though this essay by her is about wages and pensions, it also illustrates the dilemma that we on the Gulf Coast face post-Katrina/Deluge.

The current Administration does not care for the “little People”. It’s almost as if we time-slipped back to the feudal era in Europe. We are the serfs, subject to the whim of our masters. Fuck them… this is America, and once again, this cannot stand.

It’s time to fight, not just for our beloved city, but for the soul of a Nation, a country that believed in fairness and continuity of Culture. The genesis of the new Progressive movement shall start here in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. We can attest to what the current regime is up to.

Money IS NOT the ruling factor in America, people are. This must be re-emphasized as it is the reason for the Founding of the country. This country is about the individual, not the corporations and their stooges.

We in New Orleans will lead the way to a revolution in American politics. (More to come)

The Politics of American Greed

I don’t get it. What’s the percentage in keeping the minimum wage at $5.15 an hour? After nine years? This is such an unnecessary and nasty Republican move. Congress has voted seven times to raise its own wages since last the minimum wage budged. Of course, Congress always raises its own salary in the dark of night, hoping no one will notice. But now it does the same with the minimum wage, quietly killing it.

Anyone who doesn’t think this is a country where the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer needs to check the numbers — this is Bush country, where a rising tide lifts all yachts.

According to the current issue of Mother Jones:

  • One in four U.S. jobs pays less than a poverty-level income.
  • Since 2000, the number of Americans living below the poverty line at any one time has risen steadily. Now, 13 percent — 37 million Americans — are officially poor.
  • Bush’s tax cuts (extended until 2010) save those earning between $20,000 and $30,000 an average of $10 a year, while those making $1 million are saved $42,700.
  • In 2002, Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, compared those who point out such statistics as the one above to Adolph Hitler (surely he meant Stalin?).
  • Bush has diverted $750 million to “healthy marriages” by shifting funds from social services, mostly childcare.
  • Bush has proposed cutting housing programs for low-income people with disabilities by 50 percent.
  • A series of related stats — starting with the news that two out of three new jobs are in the suburbs — shows how the poor are further disadvantaged in the job hunt by lack of public or private transportation.

Meanwhile, for those who have been following the collapse of the pension system, please note a series in The Wall Street Journal by Ellen Schultz taking a hard look at executive pension obligations:

  • “Benefits for executives now account for a significant share of pension obligations in the United States, an average of 8 percent (of large companies). Sometimes a company’s obligation for a single executive’s pension approaches $100 million.”
  • “These liabilities are largely hidden, because corporations don’t distinguish them from overall pension obligations in their federal financial findings.”
  • “As a result, the savings that companies make by curtailing pensions of regular retirees — which have totaled billions of dollars in recent years — can mask a rising cost of benefits for executives.”
  • “Executive pensions, even when they won’t be paid until years from now, drag down the earnings today. And they do so in a way that’s disproportionate to their size, because they aren’t funded with dedicated assets.”

It seems to me that we’ve seen enough evidence over the years that the capitalist system is not going to be destroyed by an outside challenger like communism — it will be destroyed by its own internal greed. Greed is the greatest danger as we develop an increasingly winner-take-all system. And voices like The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page encourage this mentality by insisting that any form of regulation is bad. But for whom?

It is so discouraging to watch this country become less and less fair — “justice for all” seems like an embarrassingly archaic tag. Republicans have rigged the “lottery of life” in this country in ways we don’t even know about yet. The new bankruptcy law is unfair, and the new college loan rules are worse. The system has been stacked so that large corporations have an inside track over small businesses in getting government contracts. We won’t see the full consequences of this mean and careless legislation for years, but it is starting to affect us already.

HUD to New Orleans Poor: “Go F(ind) Yourself (Housing)!”

Filed under: Community Planning,FEMA,New Orleans,Progressive News — Tags: , , — Morwen Madrigal @ 4:13 pm

Well, as I was looking for more info concerning HUD’s plans for the poor of our city, I ran across this piece on Common Dreams by Bill Quigley from today. Here’s some info we ain’t seen on NOLA.

Excerpt (Emphasis mine):

“As James Perry, Director of the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Center says about the planned demolition of public housing, “If the model is River Gardens, it has failed miserably.” Despite HUD’s promise to demolish homes, the right of people to return to New Orleans is slowly being recognized as a human rights issue. According to international law, the victims of Katrina are “internally displaced persons” because they were displaced within their own country as a result of natural disaster. Principle 28 of the Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement requires that the U.S. government recognize the human right of displaced people to return home. The US must “allow internally displaced persons to return voluntarily, in safety and with dignity, to their homes or places of habitual residence. Such authorities shall facilitate the reintegration of returned or resettled internally displaced persons. Special efforts should be made to ensure the full participation of internally displaced persons in the planning and management of their return or resettlement and reintegration.” The US Human Rights Network and other human rights advocates are educating people of the Gulf Coast and the nation about how to advocate for human rights. HUD has effectively told the people of New Orleans to go find housing for themselves. New Orleans already has many, many people, including families, living in abandoned houses – houses without electricity or running water. New Orleans has recently been plagued with an increase in the number of fires. HUD’s actions will put more families into these abandoned houses. Families in houses with no electricity or water should be a national disgrace in the richest nation in the history of the world. But for HUD and others with political and economic power this is apparently not the case.”

I Fuckin’ Stand… A Rant

Filed under: Civic Blogging,New Orleans,Progressive News,Think New Orleans — Tags: , — Morwen Madrigal @ 5:19 am

Today i posted a piece from “People Get Ready” about a Planning thing that’s going to screw us. Talked with the Prez of the GCIA, and none of us knew about this shit. I’m now in a very evil mood, and I’m gonna spill my vitrol.
I helped found the GCIA, all out of care for my neighbors. I sat in SoCal going crazy out of worry for N.O. for months. Now I see the freakin’ carpetbaggers slimeing their way to Bethlehem at our expense. This cannot stand.

This is Bushite crap…. fucking money. The death of a country I have always treasured, that I fought for. What about the folks that used to live here? Betty and I have options, what about the rest? Where is the Social Contract? Where is the agreement that we all supported as Americans?

I have no hatred towards people in other parts of the country, even if they want to write us off. That’s their choice, and I’ll return the favor when they get screwed. Fair is fair, right?

My fight is with the freakin’ gov’ment, on all damn levels. I’m sick of Halliburton, Dollar Bill, the Shrub, and all this crap from Washington. We have a Govenor that will screw all of us to the wall for political gains, Congress people we can’t trust, and corperations willing to steal our lives and homes to benefit their non-working shareholders.

I have been working since I was 13. Gave 9 years to the Navy and my beloved America. Suffered the indignity of the Eisenhower Culture that “built” me when I was a baby so I’d be “normal”. Spent decades fighting for “just folks”. Now we are facing this Battle for New Orleans and our souls. When can we have some peace?

Our city is destroyed. People wander with a thousand mile stare. Suicides abound. The money vampires hover over our shattered culture. We are all lost in so many ways. We don’t deserve this.
Do you want this for your home? How about your parents? Your children? Your friends and lovers?

I know I keep mentioning the Social Contract. This is what allows us to have a Culture, to take care of each other. To have our lives and dreams. To realize our potentials. To feel safe within our lives.

Where is the Social Contract now?

I know that I’m pissing many folks off, but I’m not going to quit. I will be what should be your conscience. You can hate my guts, but I’m going to be the good Jeffersonian, a Patriot, and it’s going to be in everyone’s faces. We need a fuckin’ Revolution in this country. The status quo must go… we need a new mindset. We need to become a humane culture again. We need change.
This is where I stand.

Secret FEMA Plan To Use Pastors as Pacifiers in Preparation For Martial Law

I’m not usually in the “It must be a Conspiracy…” camp, but I ran across this today on Prison Planet.com

Considering some of the response and actions perpetrated on N.O. after the Deluge, this kind of crap frighteningly seems possible to me considering the current Ruling Elite to me. I don’t like thse kinds of threats to our liberties as citizens of this country.

Figures… I thought we had already been screwed enough here, and it looks like it could be worse nexttime. Fuck!

Read on:

Secret FEMA Plan To Use Pastors as Pacifiers in Preparation For Martial Law
Nationwide initiative trains volunteers to teach congregations to “obey the government” during seizure of guns, property, forced inoculations and forced relocation

Paul Joseph Watson/Prison Planet.com | May 24 2006

A Pastor has come forward to blow the whistle on a nationwide FEMA program which is training Pastors and other religious representatives to become secret police enforcers who teach their congregations to “obey the government” in preparation for a declaration of martial law, property and firearm seizures, and forced relocation.

In March of this year the Pastor, who we shall refer to as Pastor Revere, was invited to attend a meeting of his local FEMA chapter which circulated around preparedness for a potential bio-terrorist attack, any natural disaster or a nationally declared emergency.

The FEMA directors told the Pastors that attended that it was their job to help implement FEMA and Homeland Security directives in anticipation of any of these eventualities. The first directive was for Pastors to preach to their congregations Romans 13, the often taken out of context bible passage that was used by Hitler to hoodwink Christians into supporting him, in order to teach them to “obey the government” when martial law is declared.

It was related to the Pastors that quarantines, martial law and forced relocation were a problem for state authorities when enforcing federal mandates due to the “cowboy mentality” of citizens standing up for their property and second amendment rights as well as farmers defending their crops and livestock from seizure. It was stressed that the Pastors needed to preach subservience to the authorities ahead of time in preparation for the round-ups and to make it clear to the congregation that “this is for their own good.”

I’m back online…

Okay… my laptop died a few days ago, or at lteast the power switch died. I’ve been almost insane since then.

Today Betts got her new IBM, and I got her laptop. This puter is different: there’s only one of them in the world. It’s a prototype for the company Betts works for. Life is good.

Speaking of prototypes, we here in the Isle d’Orleans have the once in a lifetime chance to be just that as we restore our homes, infrastructure and that strange life culture that flourishes in the old French-held territory along our part of the Gulf Coast.

We get to reinvent ourselves and our cities and towns. We have the chance to show the world how things can be done and still preserve our ways of life. New Orleans can flower into the best city on the globe. Our schools and universities can become cutting-edge, but… we have to be willing to dare to be creative.
Unfortunately, Willy Wonka announced his 100 day plan for N.O., and is calling for a revitalization of the BNOBC Plan. This cannot stand: It will kill our culture and replace it with the same old bland crap that litters America’s landscape. This must be fought against and forgotten.
Look at the concepts produced by the Gentilly Charrette. Think outside the old Neo-con money box. Let’s rebuild smart and inclusive of all here. Get rid of those damn Projects. Remove blight. Tell the carpetbaggers to go screw themselves. Bring everyone home…

It’s not going to be easy. There will be hurdles to jump, but I believe we can pull it off when no other place in this country could. We are special… New Orleans made us that way. Let’s celebrate and honor Her, and do the best damn job we can.

Namaste!

Congress Targets Social Network Sites

Those fun-lovin’ Conservatives on Capital Hill are at it again. Using the concept of better protection for Minors who use the Web, they are trying to pass a new law… sounds good, but it is the thin edge of the wedge as far as freedom of speech goes on the Web.

You know how much these concerned folks would love shoot Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, Stephen Colbert… (and most of the folks in the Blue states), they don’t like us Bloggers very much either. It also could hinder Civic Blogging and our efforts here. Many of the folks from the city use Public Libraries to keep up on what is happening down here.
Read the piece. It’s one from the Raw Story. (excerpts below)

MySpace.com is facing a new threat on Capitol Hill.

MySpace and other social-networking sites like LiveJournal.com and Facebook are the potential targets for a proposed federal law that would effectively require most schools and libraries to render those Web sites inaccessible to minors, an age group that includes some of the category’s most ardent users.

*****

That’s a broad category that covers far more than social-networking sites such as Friendster and Google’s Orkut.com. It would also sweep in a wide range of interactive Web sites and services, including Blogger.com, AOL and Yahoo’s instant-messaging features, and Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which permits in-game chat.

Fitzpatrick’s bill, called the Deleting Online Predators Act, or DOPA, is part of a new, poll-driven effort by Republicans to address topics that they view as important to suburban voters. Republican pollster John McLaughlin polled 22 suburban districts and presented his research at a retreat earlier this year. Rep. Mark Kirk, an Illinois Republican, is co-sponsoring the measure.
